Kieran Riste
When I started to investigate my career options at school, I heard about the animal care courses at Bridgwater College and how good the new facilities were. I was lucky enough to get an Apprenticeship with a local veterinary hospital and my employers decided that I would do my training at Bridgwater College. This means I get a good balance of practical and theory work. I work for four days a week and attend College one day a week. The combination works well – I take my College learning into my work environment, and my experience from the animal hospital back into the classroom. The Apprenticeship route means I am doing things like anaesthetics and surgery on a daily basis, which I might not have had the chance to do on a full-time course. It’s perfect for me.

Dan Mackenzie
I did some work experience with a landscaping company and really enjoyed it whilst I was at school and really enjoyed it. Working with mowers and machinery really interested me and so I thought I’d look in to the types of jobs that might suit me. The Apprenticeship route is ideal – working and studying has helped me to grow up and it’s also nice to earn a wage doing something that I enjoy. My dream would be to move to Scotland and work on one of the top golf courses. I once visited the course at Loch Lomand and met the head groundsman there - he really inspired me to do what I am doing today.
Dan Mackenzie, former pupil of Taunton School, is studying the Apprenticeship in Sports Turf.
Jack Blunn
Bridgwater College isn’t my nearest college, but my employers decided they wanted me to do my Apprenticeship training here because of its strong reputation. I enjoy coming into College for my course and I have a training officer and an assessor who visit me in the workplace to see how I am applying my learning. They are both very supportive to me, which encourages me to do better. The practical work suits me the best and it means I never get bored – there is always something new to learn and perfect! I enjoy the process of design through to manufacture, and seeing a concept through to the final product. It’s usually a rewarding experience!
Jack Blunn, a former pupil of Wadham School in Crewkerne, is studying the Apprenticeship in Engineering.
